CLEAR

I have been given to go ahead to being running again...'ease back into it' my doc says. The baby is doing well, strong heartbeat and measuring right on track for this stage in the pregnancy. The blood clot is gone, thankfully. Time to get back to some sort of running, although I know that will look very different for the next 7 months....wait, the next year I mean...

"run" for Central Park

I registered for this 4M race before I knew I would be sidelined from running. It was going to be my first race of my annual 9+1 attempt...plus, as I did with my son, I want to run a race every month that I am pregnant with number two...I missed a March race due to health complications (technically month one), so I'm already behind in that regard. So anyway, on to the race. It was cold and pouring rain and my only option was to walk this race, doctors orders. My more-supportive-than-I-deserve husband offered, well insisted really, that he walk the race with me pushing our son in his (yes rain covered) running stroller.

So. We walked, in the cold rain, to the start 1 mile away, walked 4 miles, in the cold rain, and walked home from the finish line 1 mile, in the cold rain. What a miserable race. But. I did it. I didn't quit. Race number one for 9+1 and race number one for pregnancy number two: check.

OUT

I have been sidelined...again...another (thankfully innocuous) blood clot that has to clear before I can resume running. Boo. Initially this will last for 2 weeks when I will get checked again. I am borderline depressed about not being able to run, but I hope to look at the bright side and take advantage of the time to relax without the pressure to get a run in.

In Pursuit of Corndog

This morning was a family outing, the impetus of which was primarily to look for some Spring clothes for my son but what quickly turned into a mission to find a good corndog in the city...after stopping in Gray's Papaya (famous for hot dogs in NYC) and seeing they had no corndogs, we decided to walk until we found one.

Well, truth be told, we never did find that elusive hot dog (perhaps a trip to Coney Island is in order?) but we did walk all the way down to 42nd street where we got a chili cheese dog and milkshake at this great new diner, Schnippers. We ran home North up the Greenway and called it a morning with 3.9 miles walked and 3.6 miles run...7.5 miles for the day is not bad even without the corndog.

Oh Well

In my attempt to multi task this morning and get in a run and grocery store visit, I was thwarted by New York's unpredictable weather (and thus the local meteorologists' inability to properly forecast the weather). It was too windy to keep my son out for too long, and overcast with threatening showers, so my 3 mile run + grocery run for a total of about 4.5 miles turned into a 2.4 mile round trip instead. Mileage is mileage, but I was disappointed not to get in the extra miles. Strength training twice already this week makes me feel a bit better...a bit.

Rain Run - Soccer - Rain Run

Another group run this afternoon under threatening skies here in the city. It drizzled on and off as we made our way South in the park, then we stopped a little over a mile in to play soccer with my son, I did a quick lap around some baseball fields, then it started raining harder so we had to get home. Not the greatest run, but we did manage 3.4 miles.

Quick Tempo (sort of)

I literally had 25 minutes to squeeze in a run today amongst a plethora of things going on in the Goodwin household. Being that I have been so tired on my runs lately (a 2 year old will do that to ya, eh?) I've been running at just under a 10 minute pace (*grimace*).

So. I figured I would go out and run quickly and see what happened. I walked out the door at 3:40 (trip out to the park), finished my run (trip back to the apartment) and returned at 4:00. I'm guessing my commute was about a minute each way, maybe 1:30. Turns out I ran exactly 2 miles...in about 17-18 minutes. I didn't get a lot of mileage, but I am relieved to know that my legs can at least still run a sub-9 minute mile after all of these slower runs I've been eeking out.

Traffic

I realized on today's run that wishing so whole heartedly for the sun and Spring to make their appearance regular that everyone else in the free world will be taking advantage as well. I took my son out in the jogger for this afternoon's run and I found the park filled with more obstacles than I had anticipated: soccer teams running drills on the bridle path, track teams warming up around the great lawn loop and running sprints down the East side, traffic Northbound for commuters. Aaahh! Where am I supposed to run that I can navigate the jogger and get in a decent run? The answer is not where but when. With the changing season and invariable increase in park traffic, I will need to find a sweet spot of time to fit in my runs. To be continued. PS I ran 3.2 miles today.

Group Run

I've said it many times, but I love our family group runs. This afternoon, we ran 3.7 miles together around a beautiful sunny park, then stopped to let my son play on the swings and in the Pinetum. The sun is lifting my running spirits...come on Spring!

Roundabout Fool

I did not want to go running today. I have been feeling sluggish. I think I have the winter blues, except it is Spring, or it is supposed to be anyway. It is still cold, windy and rainy here. In fact it was snowing this morning. It's April 1st. April Fool's indeed!

When my husband got home from work, though, he encouraged me to head out for just a little bit, so I wound around the park close by our apartment. Something about being so near to home where I could exit my run at anytime made it easier to get through the measly 3 miles I ran.
